Keeping your browser and computer working well

Simple checks that help pages load quickly, and what to do if things feel slow.

Commusoft runs in your web browser, so the health of your browser and computer affects how quickly pages load and respond. These quick checks keep everything running smoothly. They're also the first things our support team asks about, so working through them first can save you time.

Tip: Make sure your computer meets our Commusoft system requirements. We recommend Google Chrome, and Safari is also supported.

How to check your browser and computer

Work through these steps in order. Most take a minute or two.

Step 1: Update your browser

Commusoft needs the latest version of your browser. Browser updates include performance improvements and security fixes.

Google Chrome

➡️ Click the Menu icon (three dots) > Help > About Google Chrome

  1. Chrome checks for updates automatically.

  2. If you see Google Chrome is up to date, no action is needed.

  3. If an update is available, Chrome downloads it for you. Save any unsaved work, then click Relaunch.

Safari

Safari updates with macOS, so updating your Mac updates Safari.

➡️ Click the Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update

  1. Install any available update.

  2. Restart your Mac if prompted.

Step 2: Try a private window

A private window opens Commusoft without your saved browsing data, and Chrome turns extensions off by default. It's a quick way to see whether something stored in your normal window is affecting performance.

  • Chrome on Windows: Press Ctrl + Shift + N

  • Chrome on Mac: Press Cmd + Shift + N

  • Safari: Click File > New Private Window

Log in to Commusoft in the private window and repeat what you were doing. If it runs smoothly there, something stored in your normal window is the likely cause, such as an extension or saved data.

If something looks wrong rather than slow, clearing your browser's cache can help. For example, a page might not display correctly, or might not show recent changes after an update. Your browser saves copies of pages so they load faster, and occasionally it shows an older version.

Note: You don't need to clear your cache regularly. Clear it if a page isn't displaying correctly, or if our support team asks you to. Learn how in How to clear your web browser cache.

Step 3: Close tabs and extensions you don't need

Each open tab and extension uses some of your computer's memory. With many open at once, your browser can slow down.

  1. Close any tabs you're not using.

  2. Reload Commusoft and check whether it responds more quickly.

To turn off Chrome extensions you don't need:

➡️ Click the Menu icon (three dots) > Extensions > Manage Extensions

  1. Toggle off any extensions you don't use.

  2. Reload Commusoft and check again.

Step 4: Check your internet connection

A slow or unstable connection affects how quickly Commusoft loads and saves.

  1. Check your computer has a strong Wi-Fi signal or a wired connection.

  2. Open a few other websites. If they're also slow, your connection is the likely cause.

  3. If you can, try a different network and compare.

Step 5: Check your computer's memory

All your open applications share your computer's memory (RAM). If memory use stays high, your browser can respond more slowly.

Windows

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.

  2. On the Processes tab, check the Memory column to see which applications use the most.

  3. Close any applications you don't need.

Mac

➡️ Click Finder > Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor

  1. Click the Memory tab.

  2. Check the Memory Pressure graph at the bottom. Yellow or red means your Mac is running low.

  3. Close any applications you don't need.

Step 6: Restart and update your computer

Restarting frees up memory and clears temporary files. Keeping your operating system updated keeps it stable and compatible with your browser.

Windows

➡️ Click Start > Power > Restart

Choose Restart rather than Shut down. Depending on your settings, shutting down doesn't fully refresh Windows.

To check for updates:

➡️ Click Start > Settings > Windows Update

  1. Click Check for updates.

  2. Install any updates and restart if prompted.

Mac

➡️ Click the Apple menu > Restart

To check for updates, follow the Safari steps in Step 1.

What happens next

If Commusoft still feels slow after these checks, contact our support team and we'll look into it. Include as much of the following as you can, so we can investigate quickly:

  • Browser: Which browser and version you're using

  • Private window: Whether the slowness also happens in a private window

  • Where: Which areas of Commusoft are affected, and what you were doing

  • Who and when: Which users are affected, and whether it happens at certain times of day

  • Recording: A short screen recording showing the behavior, if possible

Common questions

Which browser should I use for Commusoft?

We recommend Google Chrome for Commusoft, and Safari is also supported. Firefox and Edge work, but our testing focuses on Chrome and Safari, and our support team can best help if you use one of them.

Should I clear my cache if Commusoft is slow?

Clearing your cache isn't usually needed if Commusoft is slow. It's most useful when a page doesn't display correctly or doesn't show recent changes. For slowness, work through the other checks in this article first.

How often should I do these checks?

Do these checks whenever Commusoft feels slower than usual. Keeping your browser and computer updated and restarting regularly also helps prevent slowness in the first place.

Can an older computer affect how Commusoft runs?

Yes, an older computer can affect how Commusoft runs, especially with several applications open. Check it meets the minimum specification in Commusoft system requirements. For the best experience, we recommend a computer that exceeds it.
